Reading

Intent: Our school’s shared vision is that every pupil learns to read quickly and continues to read – widely and often.

At the heart of our strategy is our drive to foster a love of reading for all pupils. Reading is a skill that enables children to develop their learning across the wider curriculum and lays the foundations for a child’s future academic achievement, wellbeing and success in life. Finding ways to engage students in reading may be one of the most effective ways to leverage social change. We have high expectations of all our pupils and every child will learn to read at Seton School.

We are a Reading School

At Seton School, we recognise the crucial importance of reading as the key to learning across all subjects.  We have designed a curriculum which places reading at its heart, with a comprehensive, carefully planned sequence of key texts providing the stimulus for reading and writing.

Our text based approach provides children with models from the best of our literary heritage.  We choose not to use extracts in our book studies, but ensure children develop an understanding of whole texts, with a real opportunity to develop reading for pleasure.

In addition to providing high quality teaching which ensures all children become confident readers, we prioritise reading across all curriculum areas and we provide rich opportunities for children to develop reading for pleasure.   Children are exposed to a rich tapestry of texts from a wide range of genres, both traditional and contemporary.   We aim to ensure the text choices represent a diverse range of content which help us to challenge stereotypes.  Author visits are planned to inspire children to develop as readers and writers.

Throughout a child's time at Seton, they will encounter a balance of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.   Our reading curriculum is a dynamic one, responsive to emerging
